Group Coaching Class Topic: When your Teen or Young Adult Individuates

Individuation is a healthy and essential developmental process for teens and young adults. We want young people to grow into independent individuals, launch into adulthood, and take ownership of their lives. We also want them to take the reins of their own recovery. the same time, when children begin to step away from their parents—especially those who have struggled emotionally or behaviorally—it can feel frightening and uncertain. Parents may feel as though they have less control, and their child may begin making choices they wouldn't make themselves.

Individuation can also feel like a rejection of parents and their values. This can be especially painful for parents who have devoted so much of their lives to helping, protecting, fixing, or believing they know what is best for their child.

Yet, handing the reins to your child is the only way your child can heal because, it is their process and their journey they have to own.  Parents play a vital role by offering support, staying emotionally attuned, providing guidance, and holding healthy boundaries. But healing cannot be accomplished from the outside—it must come from within the young person.

Individuation, although healthy and normal can be a gut wrenching process. In this class, we will be discussing individuation and how to support your teen, or young adult's healthy individuation process.
